In contrast to human manufacturing processes, which can be complex, cumbersome, wasteful and energy-intensive, nature presents us with an infinite variety of forms that are created autonomously, efficiently, elegantly and simply.  Self-shaping (or self-morphing) processes create a wide variety of complex forms and structures, which arise as a result of differences in internal material structure, and response to environmental conditions. Non-uniform internal material structure, differential growth rates and variable reactions to the environment, generate internal stresses that lead to the formation of wonderous shapes.

Automorphia is an invitation to imagine a world in which matter itself is the creator, an opportunity to rethink the concepts of form and design. How can these natural processes, which turn difference and the lack of uniformity into a mechanism for the emergence of form, affect the way we perceive the world, the way we create?
Automorphia is a glimpse into a world in which form emerges as if by magic, an invitation to discover the secret of self-shaping learned from nature, and its realization in the world of contemporary design.

AUTOMORPHIA

“Automorphia: Emergent Forms” is the fruitful collaboration between The Hebrew University and  the Bloomfield Science Museum. We are grateful of the generous support of  the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Foundation, and the Jerusalem Foundation.
